the life-changing "sell your sawdust" approach

Read time: 5 minutes | Sponsor this newsletter

Greet from the deep,

Do you ever stare at a blank document, waiting your brain for content ideas that never come?

I've been there too.

As solopreneurs, we ARE our own marketing department - so we have to put out content somehow.

But who has the time churn out posts and tweets daily?

I’ll admit it - I don’t like spending too much time writing content, so I’m trying to automate it as much as possible.

Recently, I came across another effortless way to generate quality content on autopilot.

It turns out, you likely talk about brilliant ideas every day (without even realizing it!).

Today, I’ll show you how you can turn your normal meetings & conversations into high-quality LinkedIn posts in minutes.

You’ll learn:

  • How to create high-quality content from the activities you already do every day (without spending any extra time)

  • How to turn transcripts into 10 LinkedIn posts in seconds using the Trippy Transcript Converter prompt

  • 3 simple daily practices I use to create a lot of “sawdust” for yourself to sell in the future

(and by the way, this same approach also works for ANY other type of long-form content - you’ll love this)

Let’s dive in!

How to create high-quality content from the activities you already do every day (without spending any extra time)

I used to think that creating content was a magical act.

I imagined myself sitting at my laptop kinda like Bradley Cooper in Limitless to write your life’s work:

But as I’ve gone more from being a “creator” to being a solopreneur, I realized:

As long as I do cool shit in real life, I can create content without much effort.

You can, too.

But how would I turn my daily activities into content?

I found my answer to that question when I discovered Jack Butchers’ framework of “selling your sawdust”.

The basic idea is this:

Credit to @jackbutcher for this beauty

Selling your sawdust means sharing the byproduct of the work you’re already doing.

When you work, you’re generating proof of work (meeting recordings, documents, SOPs).

That means if you just find a smooth way to convert your byproducts into content & products…

…creating content and digital assets becomes effortless.

The options for this are limitless.

You can turn anything that’s a visual, audio, or written content into posts using ChatGPT:

  • Recorded conversations

  • Your paper notes

  • Your Loom videos

  • Your instructional videos

  • Your notes

Literally anything you have recorded that contains ideas.

In this newsletter, I’ll focus on turning transcripts into LinkedIn posts, but you can apply this principle to all of the above.

I’m personally a lot in meetings, because I love to talk with smart people (and degens).

For me, I found that an easy way to “sell my sawdust” is to record these meetings I have anyways, and then turn them into long-form posts.

If you have any:

  • Meetings

  • Podcasts

  • Voice notes

…you can use this process to generate content effortlessly.

Here’s how to pull it off:

How to turn transcripts into 10 LinkedIn posts in seconds using the Trippy Transcript Converter prompt

This prompt helps you convert any transcript into 10 LinkedIn posts in seconds:

[ATTACH OR PASTE YOUR TRANSCRIPT]

Based on the attached transcript file, I want you to write 10 LinkedIn posts using the "Hook-Contrarian-In Reality-Advice-Wrap" framework:

"Hook": 1 strong, declarative sentence to grab the readers attention. It must be less than 77 characters.

Example Hook 1: "If you are building a web3 company, remember this (If you don't want to die a slow death):"

Example Hook 2: "ChatGPT will kill 90% of creators. 5 interesting ways to stand out in 2023:"

Example Hook 3: "Most people suck at hook writing (me included)

Here's a powerful top that changed my content forever:"

Example Hook 4: "The number 1 reason LinkedIn Creators fail:They focus on learning, not executing."

"Contrarian": 1-2 sentences that call out a common misconception on the topic of the article and why it's not true, and then 1 sentence to transition into the "In Reality" part of the post. Shake up the readers worldview with a fact or idea they didn't expect. "In Reality": 1-2 sentences explaining a principle, concept, method, truth, or wisdom on the topic as opposed to "Contrarian" "Advice": 3-5 actionable bullet points of 3-6 words on how the "In reality" advice can be implemented. These should be valuable to the reader. "Wrap": 1 conclusive, strong sentence to sum up the post. Can be a statement, opinion, or question.

Here's an example of a post following the framework:

"Hook": Newsletters are dead, right?

"Contrarian": Wrong! Many assume newsletters are a relic of a bygone era, swamped by the rise of social media, but that's a misconception. It's not the newsletter medium that's failing; it's the outdated approach.

"In Reality": What works now is delivering value-driven content personalized to your reader's interest. A newsletter isn't about pushing your agenda; it's about serving your followers.

"Advice":

"Identify reader interests"

"Personalize your content"

"Provide actionable advice"

"Engage, don't sell"

"Consistency is key"

"Wrap": Want to turn followers into fans? Serve, don't sell. Are you up for the challenge?

Rules:

all your posts need to be based on the attached transcript

all your posts need to follow the tone of voice and language in the transcript
HOW TO USE THE TRIPPY TRANSCRIPT CONVERTER PROMPT:
  1. Create a transcript of a recorded meeting (or record your meeting) with a software like Otter AI.

  2. Paste your transcript into the [ATTACH OR PASTE YOUR TRANSCRIPT] placeholder (or attach it as a file)

You can either just copy your transcript or export it as a file in Otter:

  3. Edit the output to create posts and threads

Polish the posts a bit so they suit your tone of voice.

I fed ChatGPT a 25-minute transcript which I used to write my upcoming course, and this is what it came up with:

Pretty decent, right?

Pro tip: You can use this prompt with any other type of long form content. You can use any prompt in the AI Audience Accelerator to turn transcripts into LinkedIn carousels, Twitter threads, Twitter long-form posts, etc

3 daily practices to implement to create a lot of “sawdust” for yourself to sell in the future

As you may have understood by now…

The more high-quality byproducts you create while working today, the more content & digital products you can create tomorrow.

If you record everything you do now, you’ll be able to sell it as a product soon.

Here are 3 low-hanging fruits you can implement to produce more digital sawdust:

1) Use OtterAI to record any meeting you do

We express ourselves better in conversations than talking to ourselves.

Recording your meetings has unlimited upside:

  • You create sawdust

  • You always remember what was said

  • You can go back if you need any clarification

How to implement:

  • Get a meeting recording software I use (Otter)

2) Record everything you do in Loom

Loom is a video recording software that anyone can use.

I once listened to Tim Ferriss’ interview with Sam Corcos, the Founder of Levels.

Corcos said that he records 20 (!) Loom videos a day - at the time I was barely recording 1 per week.

The reason recording Loom videos about everything you do is so powerful is that it creates a library of exactly what you work on and how you do it.

In the future, you can then go back to watch these recordings.

Again, unlimited upside, limited downside (Loom is $20 a month)

How to implement:

  • Install Loom

  • Buy the Loom premium plan and record a new video whenever you do a new activity

3) Keep a daily voice journal of your business progress

Written journaling never worked out for me.

But voice journaling does.

It’s just lower friction, and I can do it while walking.

I try to record a voice journal note every day, so I can turn it into content or digital products in the future.

How to implement:

  • Get the Otter app and record a voice note every evening before sleeping

  • You can google “journaling questions” if you need guidance

Turning walks into creation time was a game-changer to me.

But today, it’s gonna be a bit more challenging….

Why?

I’ve landed in Bavaria and its snowy and cold af.

Cyprus has made me soft.

Nevertheless, I’ll go for a late evening walk to shout ideas into my phone.

Enjoy your day,

Ole
